海角大神 (BHA) has today announced the appointment of Tom Byrne as Head of Racing and Betting.
Tom will join the BHA from the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB), where he has worked as Operations Manager for almost four years, following previous roles at GBI Racing and Racing Post. He will begin his role at the BHA in February 2022.
The Head of Racing and Betting is a revised role, replacing the role of Head of Racing and Racecourse previously held by Paul Johnson, who will move to the National Trainers Federation as Chief Executive in January.
As well as overseeing the management and development of the BHA鈥檚 Racing Department and its production and development of the fixture list and race programme, the role now also incorporates responsibility for liaison with the betting industry with a view to supporting the growth of betting on British racing.
Commenting on the appointment, Richard Wayman, the BHA鈥檚 Chief Operating Officer, said: 鈥淭his was a very competitive recruitment process, and Tom was appointed from an impressive field of candidates.
鈥淭om is a great addition to the BHA team. As part of his role at HBLB, he has been heavily involved in matters relating to the fixture list and race programme, and their funding. As a result, he has a deep understanding of these areas as well also having strong relationships with many of racing鈥檚 stakeholders, with whom he will continue to work closely.
鈥淎s well as looking to continue to develop the fixture list and race programme to ensure that our horses have the opportunities to fulfil their potential, we want to ensure that racing can grow its appeal to customers and investors. Tom鈥檚 good relationships with the betting industry will also be an asset, with betting liaison now forming an important part of the job.
鈥淚鈥檓 delighted to welcome Tom to the BHA and look forward to working with him.鈥
Speaking of his appointment, Tom Byrne said:
鈥淭o join the BHA as part of the experienced and talented Racing team is an opportunity and challenge that I am thrilled to have been offered.
鈥淚 am passionate about British Racing and look forward to working with my new colleagues and stakeholders across the sport to deliver an environment which produces the competitive and compelling horseracing that is so crucial for our long-term growth and sustainability.
鈥淚t has been an honour to work for the Levy Board and I would like to thank Alan Delmonte and the HBLB team for all their support, encouragement and guidance. I鈥檓 pleased we will continue to work closely together in my new role.鈥
