How Saturday race times are changing in 2026
By Tom Byrne, BHA Head of Racing and Betting
In 2024,ÌýBritish racingÌýintroducedÌýa protected Saturday afternoon window as part ofÌýaÌýtwo-yearÌýtrialÌýof fixture listÌýinitiatives.ÌýThe trial put a limit on the number of fixtures that could take place in a two-hour protected windowÌýprimarilyÌýbetween 2pm and 4pmÌýtoÌýgiveÌýour best fixtures andÌýraces more space and visibilityÌýtoÌýhelpÌýgrow interest in the sport.Ìý
InÌýits mainÌýobjective,Ìýthe protected window trialÌýachieved what we hoped, as it gave ourÌýmajor racesÌýtime and space to breathe. Betting data confirms that major races produce significantly higher turnover when given an increased lead time,Ìýcompared to other races where turnoverÌýgenerally growsÌýless significantly with the same lead time.Ìý
However, the trial also highlighted some challenges. While the protected window createdÌýmore opportunities toÌýengage with ourÌýheadline racesÌýand fixtures, it caused congestion elsewhere in the day andÌýimpactedÌýattendance atÌýmany, although not all,ÌýfixturesÌýthat wereÌýmoved out of their traditional slots.ÌýÌý
We have looked at the trial in detail,Ìýand in 2026 we will be moving forward withÌýthoseÌýelements that worked, and dropping other elements that didn’t,ÌýtoÌýfind a happy medium that will allow our best races the time and space they deserve, without impactingÌýasÌýmuch on other Saturday fixtures.Ìý
What’sÌýchanging in 2026ÌýandÌýwhy?Ìý
As announced alongside theÌýpublication of the 2026 Fixture List, this year we will move away from the blanket protected window and adopt a more targeted approach to our major races. The goal remains the same: to ensure our most important races receive the prominence they deserve. But rather than applying this across all fixtures, we will focus on approximately 100 major Saturday races throughout the year.Ìý
These will include:Ìý
- Races atÌýmajorÌýfestivalsÌý(such as theÌýGrand NationalÌýmeeting, Derby, Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood, Ebor)Ìý
- Group/Grade 1 racesÌý
- The highest betting turnover race of the day from the previous yearÌý
- Races worth £150k+Ìý
There will always be at least one race on a Saturday afternoon thatÌýbenefitsÌýfrom thisÌýadditionalÌýspace.Ìý
HowÌýwillÌýitÌýwork?
For these key races, we will aim to create aÌýminimum of aÌý10-minute clear gapÌýbefore the scheduled start time. For example, if a major race is set for 3:30pm, the raceÌýpriorÌýwill be scheduled toÌýhaveÌýfinishedÌýby 3:20pm.Ìý
ThisÌýmayÌýrequire slightly longerÌýgapsÌýbetween racesÌýatÌýother Saturday afternoon fixtures –Ìýup to a maximum of 45Ìýminutes.ÌýButÌýwe hope racecourses willÌýbe able toÌýuse these gaps toÌýfind other ways of engaging their customers, including promoting and showing the major race.ÌýÌý
WeÌýwillÌýseekÌýtoÌýlimit the number of extended gapsÌýas much as we can,ÌýandÌýensure noÌýsingleÌýracecourse is disproportionately affectedÌýthroughout the year.Ìý
We are working collaboratively with both ITV and Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) to make this possible. While weÌýcan’tÌýcontrol Irish race times,ÌýweÌýareÌýengaging closely with HRI to align on thisÌýconceptÌýwhere possible and extend similarÌýbenefitsÌýto major Irish races that take place on Saturday afternoons. ThisÌýacknowledgesÌýbothÌýanyÌýsupport they will be ableÌýtoÌýoffer us, as well as theÌýoverallÌýbenefit toÌýracingÌýof supportingÌýthe best races in IrelandÌýand theÌýinterestÌýthat they generate from British customers.Ìý
Of course,ÌýthereÌýmayÌýstillÌýsomeÌýbe factors outside of our immediate controlÌýthatÌýimpactÌýhow muchÌýlead timeÌýwe can give to certain races throughout the year,Ìýmeaning thatÌýwe willÌýcontinue toÌýdevelop and improve our approachÌýas we learnÌýtheÌýlessons in practice. However, we will be applying theÌýprinciples of this policy asÌýweÌýdo ourÌývery best toÌýofferÌýthe appropriate levelÌýof spaceÌýfor our biggest races to shine, maximising theÌýopportunity for all of our customers, on and off-course,Ìýto engage with and enjoy these racesÌýin 2026.Ìý
