California Chrome was never truly challenged in the Awesome Again, as he led the entire way and finished 2 ÂĽ lengths ahead of his nearest competition, multiple Grade 1 winner DORTMUND (USA) [122]. In his previous start, California Chrome had beaten champion Beholder by five lengths in the $1 Million TVG Pacific Classic Stakes (G1).

The 5-year-old chestnut is now a perfect six-for-six in 2016. His other victories this year include the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1), San Diego Handicap (G2), San Pasqual Stakes (G2) and Trans Gulf Electromechanical Trophy.

In Australia, WINX (AUS) [127] won the Colgate Optic White Stakes (G1) and Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes (G1), as she stays on course to defend her title in the William Hill Cox Plate (G1) later this month.

The champion mare, who has won all seven of her starts this year and 12 consecutive races overall, is set to face HARTNELL (GB) [123] in the Cox Plate. A notable newcomer to this edition of the rankings, Hartnell has posted three consecutive victories Australia. His latest win came in the Yellowglen Turnbull Stakes (G1), and in September he won both the Ascend Sales Trophies Hill Stakes (G2) and the Tattersalls Club Chelmsford Stakes (G2).

Meanwhile, in France FOUND (IRE) [123] improved her rating from 122 to 123 with her 1 ¾-length victory in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1). It was a memorable day for Coolmore and Aidan O’Brien, as Found beat her own stablemates to the wire. HIGHLAND REEL (IRE) [122] was second, while ORDER OF ST GEORGE (IRE) [120] was third.

In her previous start, Found had finished second by three-quarters of length to ALMANZOR (FR) [127] in the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes (G1). The two are set to meet again in the QIPCO Champion Stakes (G1) on Saturday, where they will also face last year’s winner, FASCNATING ROCK (IRE) [123].

Also on Arc Day, LIMATO (IRE) [122] won the Qatar Prix de la Foret (G1) to improve his rating from 120 to 122. His other big victory this year came in the Darley July Cup (G1).

In America, SONGBIRD (USA) [123] continued to impress with her 5 Âľ-length score in the Cotillion Stakes (G1). With that win, she improved her rating from 122 to 123 and remains undefeated in 11 career starts.

Although he was facing the likes of champion Beholder and multiple Grade 1 winner DORTMUND (USA) [122], California Chrome made easy work of his competition in the Pacific Classic. The 5-year-old chestnut led gate to wire to win by five lengths and is a perfect five-for-five in 2016. His other victories this year include the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1), San Diego Handicap (G2), San Pasqual Stakes (G2) and Trans Gulf Electromechanical Trophy.

A new major player to the rankings is ARROGATE (USA) [129], who is now the co-second highest rated horse in the world alongside A SHIN HIKARI (JPN) [129]. In his first start in graded stakes company, the 3-year-old colt made history when he won the Travers Stakes (G1) by 13 ½ lengths and broke a track record that had stood for 37 years. Plans call for Arrogate to train up to the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), where he would face California Chrome.
Another notable newcomer is ALMANZOR (FR) [127], the Prix du Jockey Club (G1) hero who defeated a strong field in the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes (G1). The French raider bested FOUND (IRE) [122] by three-quarters of a length, while MINDING (IRE) [120] was third in the highlight of LONGINES Irish Champions weekend.

Elsewhere, star mare WINX (AUS) [127] continued her winning ways, taking the Warwick Stakes (G2) in her spring debut. She was then scratched from the Chelmsford Stakes (G2) due to the track conditions but is set to run in Saturday’s Colgate Optic White Stakes (G1). In England, POSTPONED (IRE) [124] added to his winning streak by taking the Juddmonte International Stakes (G1) over HIGHLAND REEL (IRE) [121] and MUTAKAYYEF (GB) [120], while in America SONGBIRD (USA) [122] remained undefeated whilst winning the Alabama Stakes (G1).
Veteran FLINTSHIRE (GB) [123] is ranked for the fourth consecutive year after his 1 ¾-length victory in the LONGINES Sword Dancer Stakes (G1), which he also won in 2015. Meanwhile, MECCA’S ANGEL (IRE) [121] is ranked after she defeated LIMATO (IRE) [120] to repeat in the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes (G1).

In France, Japanese Derby (G1) winner MAKAHIKI (JPN) [121] won the Qatar Prix Niel (G2) in preparation for his anticipated start in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1) in Chantilly. Also during the Arc Trials, VADAMOS (FR) [121] won the Qatar Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (G1). In his prior race, Vadamos finished second to RIBCHESTER (IRE) [121] in the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-Le-Buffard Jaques Le Marois (G1).

California Chrome was making his first start back since his 3 Âľ-length victory in the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1) this March. He is a perfect four-for-four in 2016, with wins in the San Pasqual Stakes (G2) and Trans Gulf Electromechanical Trophy also to his credit.

In his first start of the year, multiple Grade 1 winner DORTMUND (USA) [122] finished just a half-length behind California Chrome in the San Diego. The two are slated to meet again in the TVG Pacific Classic (G1) on Aug. 20.

That Saturday will be a busy one for top international horses, as Australia’s star mare WINX (AUS) [127] is set to make her spring debut in the Warwick Stakes (G2).
Just behind Winx in the latest rankings is FROSTED (USA) [126], who followed up his Mohegan Sun Metropolitan Handicap (G1) score with a victory in the Whitney Stakes (G1).

Meanwhile, THE GURKHA (IRE) [122] has improved his rating from 120 to 122 with his neck victory over GALILEO GOLD (GB) [122] in the Qatar Sussex Stakes (G1). RIBCHESTER (IRE) [121] was a short head back in third.

Additionally, HIGHLAND REEL (IRE) [121] is ranked after his win in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1).

The Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings /the-longines-worlds-best-racehorse-rankings-5/ Thu, 12 Nov 2015 17:04:12 +0000 /?p=12398 With his dominate 6 ½ length victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), AMERICAN PHAROAH (USA) [133] increased his rating from 131 to 133 in his career finale. In doing so, he remains on top of the ninth edition of the LONGINES World’s Best Racehorse Rankings for 2015.

Rank Horse Rating Trained
1 AMERICAN PHAROAH (USA) 133 USA
2 GOLDEN HORN (GB) 130 GB
3 TREVE (FR) 126 FR
4 ABLE FRIEND (AUS) 125 HK
4 SHARED BELIEF (USA) 125 USA
6 SOLOW (GB) 124 FR

Should American Pharoah’s rating hold as the highest of 2015, he will be the first United States-based horse to top the rankings since Curlin, who was rated at 130 in 2008. The only American horse to be rated higher than American Pharoah since 1995 is Cigar, who finished 1996 at 135.

GOLDEN HORN (GB) [130] also ran for the final time during the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, finishing a close second to the filly Found in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1). His rating remains unchanged, making him the second-highest rated horse in the world.

TREVE (FR) [126], who finished fourth behind Golden Horn in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1), remains in the third spot. The five-year-old mare, who was the co-highest rated horse of 2013, has since been retired to broodmare duties.

Still tied in fourth position are the geldings ABLE FRIEND (AUS) [125] and SHARED BELIEF (USA) [125]. Making his first start since June, Able Friend won the Premier Bowl (HK G2) at the end of October. Shared Belief, who was injured earlier in the year, recently returned to trainer Jerry Hollendorfer’s barn.

Although the top horses have not changed, a number of runners have improved or joined the rankings based off of recent performances.

In England, FASCNATING ROCK (IRE) [123] and MUHAARAR (GB) [123] improved their ratings on British Champions Day by taking the QIPCO Champion Stakes (G1) and QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes (G1), respectively.

In Australia, CHAUTAUQUA (AUS) [123] took the William Hill Manikato Stakes (G1) by two lengths, the filly WINX (AUS) [122] powered home in the William Hill Cox Plate (G1), and MONGOLIAN KHAN (AUS) [120] was victorious in the BMW Caulfield Cup (G1) to join the list.

Meanwhile, two victors during Breeders’ Cup weekend find themselves ranked after their dominating performances. LIAM’S MAP (USA) [121] won the Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1), while TEPIN (USA) [120] defeated males in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1).

Rounding out the newcomers is ITO (GER) [120], winner of the Pastorius-Grosser Preis von Bayern (G1).

The final year-end rankings for 2015 will be revealed during the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Ceremony this coming January.

However, several new horses have joined the rankings.

5 TREVE (FR) 124 FR

Leading the charge is KEEN ICE (USA) [123], who defeated American Pharoah in the Travers Stakes (G1) at Saratoga. He beat the Triple Crown champion by three-quarters of a length, finally getting the better of American Pharoah after finishing third behind him in the Belmont Stakes (G1) and then second behind him in the William Hill Haskell Invitational (G1).

Two-time champion BEHOLDER (USA) [121] took on males in the $1 Million TVG Pacific Classic Stakes (G1) at Del Mar and won with devastating ease, finishing 8 ¼ lengths in front. The 5-year-old mare, who is the only runner to win both the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1), may contest the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) next month.

Meanwhile, speedsters MECCA’S ANGEL (IRE) [120] and PRIVATE ZONE (CAN) [120] also impressed this August. Mecca’s Angel won the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) at York by two lengths, in a memorable edition that saw 2-year-old Acapulco finish second. Meanwhile, Private Zone was never tested in the Priority One Jets Forego Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, which he won by 3 ¾ lengths over The Big Beast.

Moving forward, the next month of racing looks to be notable. The upcoming Longines Irish Champions Weekend features the Irish Champion Stakes (G1), which has drawn the likes of Golden Horn, dual-Guineas winner GLENEAGLES (IRE) [122], defending champion THE GREY GATSBY (IRE) [123], FREE EAGLE (IRE) [123], and CIRRUS DES AIGLES (FR) [121] as well as Group 1 winners Found, Highland Reel, and Pleascach. Then, to kick off October, TREVE (FR) [124] is on schedule to attempt a historic third Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1) victory.

Following his devastatingly easy victory in the William Hill Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1), AMERICAN PHAROAH (USA) [131] has reclaimed the top spot in the sixth edition of the LONGINES World’s Best Racehorse Ranking for 2015

Rank Horse Rating Trained
1 AMERICAN PHAROAH (USA) 131 USA
2 GOLDEN HORN (GB) 130 GB
3 ABLE FRIEND (AUS) 125 HK
3 SHARED BELIEF (USA) 125 USA
5 SOLOW (GB) 124 FR
5 TREVE (FR) 124 FR

American Pharoah, who is best known for becoming the first American Triple Crown winner in 37 years, has won all six of his races this season, five of them in Grade 1 company. The Haskell was American Pharoah’s first start since his historic achievement, and he was never truly asked to run, winning under wraps by 2 ¼ lengths.

Just behind him in the rankings is GOLDEN HORN (GB) [130], who bested his elders in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes (G1) earlier this season. The 3-year-old colt, who also won the Investec Epsom Derby (G1) and Betfred Dante Stakes (G2), is undefeated in five career starts.

Golden Horn was declared out of July’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1) due to ground conditions but is set to run in next week’s Juddmonte International (G1). The highest rated race in the world, the Juddmonte International could potentially also feature THE GREY GATSBY (IRE) [123], dual-Guineas winner GLENEAGLES (IRE) [122], and Australia’s CRITERION (NZ) [120], among others.

Clearly two special 3-year-olds, American Pharoah and Golden Horn have distanced themselves from the others so far this year. ABLE FRIEND (AUS) [125] and SHARED BELIEF (USA) [125] remain tied in third, while SOLOW (GB) [124] and TREVE (FR) [124] remain tied in fifth. At the end of July, Solow added the Qatar Sussex Stakes (G1) at Glorious Goodwood to the list of his accomplishments.

Moving up the rankings this month is HONOR CODE (USA) [123], who won the Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga in dramatic fashion. In June, he notched his first top class victory in the NYRA.com Metropolitan Handicap (G1).

CAPTAIN OF ALL (SAF) [121], who romped home in the Mercury Sprint (G1) at Greyville, is a newcomer to the rankings this month. His 4 ½-length victory came in the final start of his career, as he has since been retired to stud.

Also newly ranked is POSTPONED (IRE) [121], who won the King George in Golden Horn’s absence.

Golden Horn pulled away in the stretch to defeat THE GREY GATSBY (IRE) [123] by 3 ½ lengths at Sandown. The 3-year-old colt, who won the Investec Epsom Derby (G1) and Betfred Dante Stakes (G2) in his prior two outings, is now undefeated in five career starts. In the last 20 years, only one other horse has completed the Derby-Eclipse double, and that was champion Sea The Stars in 2009.

One start before running second to Golden Horn, The Grey Gatsby lost a photo finish to FREE EAGLE (IRE) [123] in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot.

American Triple Crown winner AMERICAN PHAROAH (USA) [128] is now the second-highest rated horse in the world, while SHARED BELIEF (USA) [125] and ABLE FRIEND (AUS) [125] are tied for third.

New to the rankings this month is SNOW SKY (GB) [124], who put on a show in the Hardwicke Stakes (G2) on the last day of Royal Ascot, winning by 3 Âľ lengths. As a result, he is tied for the co-fifth spot with TREVE (FR) [124] and SOLOW (GB) [124], who both added to their list of accomplishments in the last month.

Solow defeated Able Friend in the Queen Anne Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot, whilst Treve won the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (G1) at the end of June over FLINTSHIRE (GB) [123].

JACK HOBBS (GB) [123] has also been rated highly following his victory in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (G1) after finishing second behind Golden Horn in the Epsom Derby and Dante.

THE LONGINES WORLD’S BEST RACEHORSE RANKINGS /the-longines-worlds-best-racehorse-rankings/ Fri, 12 Jun 2015 08:34:32 +0000 /?p=11440 The official listing of the world’s best racehorses

(For 3-y-os and upwards which raced between 1st January and 7th June 2015)

With his historic victory in the Belmont Stakes presented by Draftkings (G1), AMERICAN PHAROAH (USA) [128] has garnered the top spot in the fourth edition of the LONGINES World’s Best Racehorse Rankings for 2015.

Rank Horse Rating Trained
1 AMERICAN PHAROAH (USA) 128 USA
2 ABLE FRIEND (AUS) 125 HK
2 GOLDEN HORN (GB) 125 GB
2 SHARED BELIEF (USA) 125 USA
5 SOLOW (GB) 124 FR
5 TREVE (FR) 124 FR
7 DESIGNS ON ROME (IRE) 123 HK
7 LANKAN RUPEE (AUS) 123 AUS
9 FIRING LINE (USA) 122 USA
9 GLENEAGLES (IRE) 122 IRE

In winning the Belmont by 5 ½ lengths, American Pharoah became the first American Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. American Pharoah led from start to finish and completed the race in 2:26.65, the sixth-fastest in the race’s history and second-fastest for a Triple Crown.

American Pharoah was rated at 124 after his victory in the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and only continued to improve as he took the Xpressbet.com Preakness Stakes (G1) and Belmont over the five-week span of the race series.

The same day as the American Pharoah’s run into the history books, GOLDEN HORN (GB) [125] put in an impressive showing to win the Investec Epsom Derby (G1) by 3 ½ lengths. With that victory, he joins ABLE FRIEND (AUS) [125] and SHARED BELIEF (USA) [125] as the joint second-highest rated horses in the world.

Meanwhile, in France TREVE (FR) [124] made her seasonal debut a winning one, taking the Prix Corrida (G2) by an easy four lengths. The popular runner, who was the joint highest rated horse in the world in 2013, is being pointed toward an unprecedented third victory in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1) this October.

At the end of May, Duramente (JPN) [121] won the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) (G1) in stakes-record time. He finished the 2400-metre classic in 2:23.20, shaving a tenth of a second off the previous record. Duramente, who also won the Satsuki Sho (Japanese Two Thousand Guineas) (G1) in April, could take Japan’s Triple Crown should he be victorious in October’s Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger) (G1).

Also new to the rankings is HONOR CODE (USA) [120], who won the Metropolitan Handicap (G1) with ease.

All eyes now turn to Royal Ascot next week. Hong Kong star Able Friend and America’s reigning Horse of the Year, California Chrome (USA) [121], are among the international contingent set to compete at the famed race meet.

THE LONGINES WORLD’S BEST RACEHORSE RANKINGS /longines-worlds-best-racehorse-rankings-4/ Thu, 13 Nov 2014 15:07:52 +0000 /?p=10114 The official listing of the world’s best racehorses

(For 3-y-o-s and upwards which raced between 1ĚýJanuary and 9 November 2014)

The last month has seen some exciting racing around the world with a number of impressive performances. The QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot saw two new additions to the horses included in the LONGINES World’s Best Racehorse Rankings at 120 and above. The Breeders’ Cup meeting at Santa Anita provided three new horses, while the very competitive racing held in Australia over the past month has resulted in another four horses being included for the first time.

1 JUST A WAY (JPN) 130 JPN
2 AUSTRALIA (GB) 126 IRE
2 KINGMAN (GB) 126 GB
2 THE GREY GATSBY (IRE) 126 GB
2 VARIETY CLUB (SAF) 126 UAE
6 BAYERN (USA) 125 USA
6 SEA THE MOON (GER) 125 GER
6 TREVE (FR) 125 FR
9 CALIFORNIA CHROME (USA) 124 USA
9 FLINTSHIRE (GB) 124 FR

9 GOLD SHIP (JPN) 124 JPN
9 TAGHROODA (GB) 124 GB
9 THE FUGUE (GB) 124 GB
9 TOAST OF NEW YORK (USA) 124 GB

Pride of place however goes to a horse that was already included in the LONGINES World’s Best Racehorse Rankings on [121]. BAYERN (USA) is now [125] on the strength of his thrilling all the way victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). From the same race, TOAST OF NEW YORK (USA) [124], who was beaten only a short head entered the Rankings for the first time. The third placed finisher CALIFORNIA CHROME (USA) [124], only a neck further behind, replicated his performances in both the Kentucky Derby (presented by YUM! Brands) and in the Preakness Stakes.

Also at Santa Anita in the LONGINES Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) over 12 furlongs, the very consistent MAIN SEQUENCE (USA) [122] won his fourth middle distance, turf Group 1 contest of 2014.

Pride of place in the southern hemisphere goes to TERRAVISTA (AUS) [123]. This five-year-old gelding by Captain Rio showed himself to be currently the joint best sprinter in the world by virtue of a narrow victory in the Darley Classic (G1) at Flemington over CHAUTAUQUA (AUS) [122].

In Hong Kong, MILITARY ATTACK (IRE) [123] showed his versatility by winning the Oriental Watch Sha Tin Trophy (HK G2) over 1600 metres, to complement his victory over 2000 metres in the Citibank Hong Kong Gold Cup (HK G1) back in February.

The highlight of British Champions Day was the gutsy front running success of NOBLE MISSION (GB) [122] in the QIPCO Champion Stakes (G1). This was the five year old’s third Group 1 victory of 2014 achieved in three different European countries. Second was AL KAZEEM (GB) [121], who continued his racecourse comeback from an unsuccessful stud career with his best performance of 2014.

Altogether, 12Ěýhorses have recorded performances at 120 and above for the first time this year during the past month to gain inclusion into the 2014 LONGINES World’s Best Racehorse Rankings.

The joint-highest rated horse in the world in 2013 along with Black Caviar (AUS), Treve had been beaten in her three races since her 2013 Arc triumph, but returned to winning ways in emphatic style, quickening clear in the straight to defeat FLINTSHIRE (GB) [124] by two lengths, with King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (sponsored by QIPCO) (G1) winner TAGHROODA (GB) [124] in third place, and Ladbrokes St Leger (G1) victor KINGSTON HILL (GB) [121] in fourth.

THE GREY GATSBY (IRE) [126] put up the top-rated performance by a three-year-old in the past month when taking the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes (G1) at Leopardstown. Already the three-length winner of the Prix du Jockey Club (G1), The Grey Gatsby gained his revenge on AUSTRALIA (GB) [126] from their encounter in the Juddmonte International Stakes (G1) at York in August, when Australia came out on top by two lengths.

CHARM SPIRIT (IRE) [122] gained his fourth success in five starts this year when holding off TORONADO (IRE) [121] and NIGHT OF THUNDER (IRE) [121] in the Qatar Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (G1). In so doing, he registered his second consecutive victory at the top level, having captured the Prix Jean Prat (G1) on his previous start.

OLYMPIC GLORY (IRE) [122] also captured his second victory of the season when running out the impressive two length winner of the Qatar Prix de la ForĂŞt (G1) at Longchamp,ĚýhavingĚý already won the GLT Lockinge Stakes (G1) at Newbury in May.

In North America, SHARED BELIEF (USA) [122] made it seven wins from seven starts with a hard-fought neck victory in the Awesome Again Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita, despite having to travel wide for much for the race.

At Keenelend, WISE DAN (USA) [122] won his 14thĚýrace in his last 15Ěýstarts when coming from the rear of the field to gain a length success in the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1). The seven-year-old’s only defeat in that sequence came in the corresponding race last year, which was switched to the Polytrack after heavy rain, and he has now won his last 14 races on turf.

William Hill Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) winner BAYERN (USA) [121] bounced back from a disappointing effort in the Travers Stakes (G1) to land the Pennsylvania Derby (G2) at Parx Racing by a commanding 5.75 lengths.
